Texas leads the country in hail-related insurance losses. Choosing a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle over a standard Class 3 product is one of the few roofing decisions that pays you back twice — fewer storm claims and a lower wind/hail premium.

What UL 2218 actually tests

UL 2218 is the industry-standard impact test for steep-slope roofing. A steel ball is dropped onto the shingle from a set height; a product earns its Class rating only if the surface shows no cracks, splits or back-side damage after the impact.

The Texas insurance discount, explained

Texas carriers don't all advertise it loudly, but most major homeowners insurers offer an impact-resistant roof discountwhen you install a UL 2218 Class 4 shingle and provide a manufacturer certificate. In San Antonio, Austin and the surrounding hail-prone counties the discount commonly lands between 10% and 35% on the wind/hail portion of the premium — sometimes more.

  • Ask your agent to quote your policy WITH and WITHOUT the IR discount in writing.
  • Send your agent the Class 4 manufacturer certificate after installation — the discount is rarely applied automatically.
  • Some carriers reset the discount when the policy renews; recheck annually.
  • Class 4 alone does not waive your wind/hail deductible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Class 3 and Class 4 shingles?

Both ratings come from UL 2218, the standard impact test for roofing. Class 3 shingles survive a 1.75-inch steel ball drop without cracking; Class 4 survive a 2-inch steel ball drop — roughly 30% more impact energy. In hail-prone Texas markets that translates to noticeably better resistance to denting, granule loss and bruising during storms.

Do Class 4 shingles really lower homeowners insurance premiums in Texas?

Most major Texas carriers (State Farm, Allstate, USAA, Farmers, Travelers and others) offer an impact-resistant roof discount of roughly 10–35% on the wind/hail portion of your premium when you install a UL 2218 Class 4 product. Discounts vary by carrier, ZIP code and policy form — ask your agent in writing before purchase.

Are Class 4 shingles worth the cost?

Class 4 shingles typically add $500–$1,500 to a residential roof versus a comparable Class 3 product. In Bexar, Hays, Comal, Travis and Williamson counties — where 1-inch+ hail is common — the combination of premium discount, longer life and reduced storm damage usually pays back the upgrade within 3–5 years.
